Mercury Rising

First of all, massive congratulations to ∆ Alt-J for winning the Mercury Music Prize this year.  In my opinion, An Awesome Wave is a worthy winner as it’s been played pretty much constantly in our household for a good couple of months now, which is unusual for us!

I first heard Breezeblocks and Tessellate in January this year and it was unlike anything else I’d heard for a while.  We were lucky enough to catch their ‘secret’ gig at Reading Festival and saw a bit of their main set too.  Tickets were booked as soon as we got home and we’re off to see them, but not until May next year…

For me, the Mercury Prize has always been a platform for discovering new music and celebrating music I know.  Looking back at the list of contenders and winners, some years are better than others!

What do you think?  Were ∆ worthy winners or would you have voted for someone else?

Here for your musical pleasure is Tessellate from a BBC Introducing session – if you’ve not heard it before, please stick with it – I’ve not suddenly developed a love for gregorian chanting…
